The Venice Carnival
The Venice Carnival is one of the most famous in the world and, perhaps, the most evocative, boasting truly very ancient origins. Historical sources, in fact, date this festival back to the end of the 11th century. It is tradition that the nerve center of the Venice Carnival celebrations is St. Mark’s Square. The Carnival opens with the ritual Flight of the Angel (or flight of the Colombina), during which a girl chosen by the Venetians makes a spectacular descent (suspended from a rope) toward the Doge’s Palace. The Carnival then ends at midnight on Shrove Tuesday with a blaze of fireworks that light up the St. Mark’s Basin and the entire lagoon.
Be sure to try the typical sweets of the Venice Carnival: galani, fritters (with custard, with zabaglione, and the ones called Venetian, with raisins and pine nuts) and castagnole.

The Vogalonga
One of the must-see events held in Venice is the Vogalonga, a regatta as a form of protest against the wave motion that threatens to destroy the lagoon city. This event, in fact, has long been among Venice’s major dates, a gathering that draws rowers from all over the world and is marked by respect for the environment and ecosystem together with tradition. The aim of the Vogalonga, from the very beginning, has been to raise awareness among the public about the danger of motorboats to the city’s wave motion and its resulting decay. From the start it was decided that the start of the Vogalonga should take place right in the St. Mark’s Basin, one of the key points of Venetian traffic. The total length of the Vogalonga route is about 30 km, all covered only with rowing boats.

The International Art Biennale
The Venice Biennale is one of the most famous and important cultural events in the world. Since its founding in 1895, it has been committed to the promotion of new artistic trends expressed in all the various forms. Not only art and architecture, therefore, but also dance festivals, music, theatre and cinema, with the first film festival in the world held in 1932.
All events take place every year. In fact, even if it is called a Biennale, the only events held every two years are the Architecture Exhibition and the Art one, which are also among the most visited. The Biennale each year completely takes over Venice with hundreds of side events such as concerts and exhibitions scattered throughout the city. The hearts of the exhibition are mainly two, however: the Giardini and the Arsenale.

The Feast of the Redeemer
Every year, in July and in particular on the third Sunday of this month, in Venice one of the most heartfelt events takes place, the Feast of the Redeemer. It is in fact a celebration deeply felt by Venetians and for tourists it is always exciting to take part, for one day, in an ancient tradition that is still so alive. The feast originated in the 16th century at the end of a terrible wave of plague that caused the death of more than a third of the city’s population in just two years. When the plague was declared defeated, so great was the joy of the people of Venice that the Venetian Senate of the time decided to build a temple to Christ the Redeemer, precisely to pay homage for eternity. During the Feast of the Redeemer tilting walkways are set up, real floating modules in wood and steel, and 34 boats that help support the bridge linking the Zattere quay to the island of Giudecca for two days; in this way the pedestrian passage to the Church of the Redeemer is created. Unmissable are the fireworks at midnight, which splendidly light up the magnificent lagoon. On the actual day of the feast the Patriarch of Venice opens the celebrations and, afterwards, the crowd of faithful and tourists begins the procession towards Giudecca.

The International Film Festival
The Venice International Film Festival is certainly one of the most important events held every year, between late August and early September, in the lagoon city. During this time Venice turns into a catwalk of national and international VIPs who flock to the Festival from all over the world, thus turning this magical city into a place marked by refined, classy glamour. The International Exhibition of Cinematic Art takes place in the historic Palazzo del Cinema on the Lungomare Marconi on the Lido of Venice and has the distinction of being the oldest film festival in the world since the first edition took place in August 1932. The Golden Lion (an award that owes its name to the symbol of Venice, namely the famous lion of St Mark’s Basilica) is universally recognized as one of the most important prizes in the film world, and especially by industry critics.

The Historic Regatta
To trace the first evidence collected on rowing competitions it is necessary to go back to the mid-13th century. However, the very famous Venice Historical Regatta could boast even older origins since Venice is a seaside city and, consequently, there was certainly a strong need to train crews in oars. This event attracts many passionate and curious visitors from all over the world every year. The festival is a real triumph of historic boats, costumed figures and, of course, the best rowers in the lagoon competing against each other. Before the actual races, a historical procession winds along the Grand Canal is a tradition, composed of boats typical of the 16th century and which recall the ancient glories of what was one of the most powerful Maritime Republics in the Mediterranean. Absolutely not to be missed is the gondolin race in which the champions race along the Grand Canal to the finish line at the famous "machina," a floating stage with a sure visual impact that is positioned in front of the Ca' Foscari Palace.
